The Jakarta administration offers initial capital for MRT expansion to Tangerang and South Tangerang, aiming to integrate Greater Jakarta mass transit.
he Jakarta administration has declared its commitment to providing the initial capital for the expansion of the integrated mass rapid transit (MRT) line, which will extend the service from Jakarta to neighboring Tangerang and South Tangerang cities in Banten province.
This step is a strong signal of Jakarta's commitment to encouraging the integration of mass transportation in the Greater Jakarta area.
“I told the Banten provincial administration that if initial capital is needed, the Jakarta administration is prepared to provide it, depending on the business-to-business calculations,” Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said in Jakarta on Sunday, as quoted by kompas.com.
Currently, Jakarta MRT’s North-South line runs from Lebak Bulus Station in South Jakarta to Bundaran Hotel Indonesia Station in Central Jakarta. The line is being extended further north to Kota Station in West Jakarta.
Pramono believes the MRT route could be extended to Tangerang and South Tangerang, and even to Tanjung Priok and Ancol in North Jakarta.
According to him, areas like Tanjung Priok and Ancol have the potential to help ease traffic congestion in Jakarta.
“I believe that if it can reach Tangerang or South Tangerang, and even later to Tanjung Priok, then Ancol, I am sure the MRT will help to unravel the congestion in Jakarta,” Pramono.
