edan Police in North Sumatra have arrested two suspects accused of inserting narcotics into vape liquids, amid a rising trend of using vaping devices to consume illicit drugs.
Authorities reported that both suspects were arrested on June 25 at an alleged illegal vaping liquid factory inside room 23DZ of Lexing Town Apartment in Medan, following public tips.
Head of the Narcotics Directorate at North Sumatra Police, Sr. Comr. Jean Calvijn Simanjuntak, stated that the drug factory produces 300 vape liquid cartridges laced with narcotics daily, selling each for Rp 5 million.
“This means the factory generates a daily revenue of Rp 1.5 billion, and so far, they have sold a total of 3,000 cartridges,” Jean said on Monday.
He added that during the raid, police confiscated 2,965 cartridges containing narcotics, raw ingredients to make the illicit vape liquid, solvents, artificial flavoring and sweeteners.
According to Jean, both suspects were convicted drug offenders and had allegedly been running the illicit drug factory for six months.
North Sumatra Police Chief Insp. Gen. Whisnu Hermawan Februanto said on Monday that the vaping liquid produced in the factory contains a new psychoactive drug called Epilon.
