The incident occurred at around 11 a.m. when seven UGM students and five local residents departed from Kai Kecil Island to Wahru Island to collect sand for a coral reef revitalization project.

During the students’ return trip, however, one of the boats capsized after being struck by strong waves and high winds.

Septian Eka Rahmadi, 22, was killed in the incident, while the body of Bagus Adi Prayoga, also 22, was found later that evening by a search and rescue team near the accident site.

Three other students were also hospitalized following the incident.

UGM’s community service directorate secretary, Djarot Heru Santoso, said the remains of Septian and Bagus were flown from Karel Sadsuitubun Airport in the Kai Islands, Southeast Maluku, on Wednesday morning.
