ndonesia and Thailand have agreed to elevate their ties to a strategic partnership and strengthen cooperation in defense and trade, following President Prabowo Subianto’s visit to Bangkok just one week before the ASEAN summit in Malaysia and amid global uncertainties.
On Monday, Prabowo paid a visit to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and her cabinet officials at the Government House in Bangkok. He was accompanied by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto.
After receiving a stately welcome, Prabowo held a closed-door meeting with Paetongtarn and they later announced that a joint trade commission will soon be established to promote bilateral trade and investments.
"Indonesia and Thailand's friendship is one that is long and deep, with diplomatic relations dating back 75 years,” Prabowo said in a press conference after the bilateral meeting. “This visit is the first visit by an Indonesian president to Thailand in 20 years, and it is an honor for me that our relationship has now reached a strategic partnership.”
Paetongtarn, meanwhile, underlined the need to unlock “a large potential for the relationship between the two countries”.
“I believe that our meeting today will give a new energy for our cooperation and manifest the potentials of our existing strategic partnership,” she said.
