ndonesia has strongly condemned Israel's interception of the Madleen, a British-flagged humanitarian vessel bound for Gaza, calling the action a clear violation of international law and denouncing Israel’s blockade as collective punishment that risks causing mass starvation.

Foreign Minister Sugiono in a statement on Monday urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take firm action in response to Israel’s continued restrictions on humanitarian aid, both by land and sea.

He emphasized that, under international law and International Court of Justice (ICJ) orders, Israel must ensure unimpeded aid delivery to Gaza and protect humanitarian workers.

“This is yet another blatant violation of international law and a cruel blow to those suffering in Gaza,” Sugiono wrote on his official X account. “While I welcome international efforts to open a maritime corridor, let us be clear: this must not come at the expense of securing land-based humanitarian access, which remains Gaza’s most urgent lifeline”.

At the upcoming High-Level Conference on Palestine in New York, Indonesia plans to push for a UNSC resolution to end the blockade and ensure sustained humanitarian access to Gaza, he continued.

Indonesia, a long-standing supporter of the Palestinian cause, has intensified its Palestinian diplomacy since the 2023 escalation of a decades-old conflict and the subsequent military reprise from Israel, frequently engaging in international efforts to call for a ceasefire, humanitarian aid and the recognition of Palestinian statehood.
