Commuter Line train operator PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KAI Commuter) began operations of three Chinese-made trains on Sunday.

Two trains, consisting of 12 electric railcars each, are serving the Commuter Line Bogor while another one is serving the Commuter Line Cikarang.

At 3 meters, each car is a bit wider than the current Japanese-made cars in service, which are only 2.8 m wide, but are the same length at 20 m.

The small increase in width leads to an 8 percent increase in the number of passengers that can be carried by each of the Chinese trains.

President director of PT KAI Commuter Asdo Artriviyanto said each train could now carry more than 3,400 passengers.

“Each car has a capacity of about 289 passengers, according to its specification,” Asdo said while trying out the new train, as quoted by kompas.com.
